Early Intervention, Long-Term Impact

CHeck OUt our 2023-24 Annual Report

Horizons students learn literacy skills through theater classes led by our head reading specialist.

The Horizons at SFFS program has a profound impact on students’ academic skills as well as their confidence and social-emotional learning capacities. Our long-term approach and commitment to our students allows us to get to know them on a deeply personal level as they return year after year. We’re able to identify areas of support for all of our students and see the ways Horizons supports them to grow.

Each summer, our students gain on average 2-3 months of reading and math skills. A 2018 study of Horizons affiliates found that Horizons students had higher school attendance rates and higher proficiency rates on math and science assessments than their peers, with students who had attended the program from K through 5th grade showing the biggest improvements.

  • On average, 94% of students report learning something important to them every or most days

  • 85% of middle school students report having a close relationship with one or more trusted adults at Horizons compared to 57% of SFUSD middle schoolers

  • Horizons maintains a 95% student retention rate yearly

  • 100% of Horizons parents wish to send their child to the program again in Summer 2025

  • 91% of Horizons parents say that Horizons allows their child to do things that challenge them in a good way

Horizons is everything kids need and want to do during the summer. It’s like going home. There is one thing we all share as parents: this determination to see our kids succeed and be successful. Horizons does that.
