Below are some useful, non-educational resources for families during Covid-19. Let us know if there is something in particular you would like to learn more about!
If you or one of you loved ones needs urgent help, call one of California’s crisis hotlines for emotional support or counseling; several are specific to children and/or women.
+ Food
- The Women's Building in the Mission hosts a food pantry for immigrant families every Monday and Thursday from 9 to 10 am; all you need is proof of a San Francisco address.
- If you or any member of your household has citizen or refugee status or a Green Card, you can apply to CalFresh (the California food stamps program) to receive a card which can be used for groceries in most stores and markets. Call the SF Food Bank for help applying.
- The SF-Marin Food Bank keeps an updated list of food pantries in San Francisco open to all; check the schedule here.
+ Health
- Mental health is important! Immigrants Rising offers mental health services for the immigrant community, with a special focus on young undocumented people; email mentalhealth@immigrantsrising.org and specify that you heard about them through Horizons.
- Free Covid-19 testing is available at City-run test sites for San Francisco residents who have at least 1 symptom of Covid-19 or were exposed to someone with Covid-19 in the past 14 days. Several are by appointment only; see the list here.
- The Center for Disease Control provides guidance on how to wear and wash masks.
- For general health concerns, check out this list of community clinics in San Francisco ; several work specifically with uninsured patients.
+ Housing
- If you lost your income due to COVID-19 and are at risk of losing your home, you can apply to receive help with housing costs including rent and utilities; this help is available to all San Francisco residents.
+ Employment
- If you have been laid off or had work hours reduced due to Covid 19, you can apply for unemployment benefits - here is a step by step guide in both English and Spanish.
- Legal Aid at Work can inform you of your rights and protections in the workplace - if you have any questions check out their very detailed FAQ page.
- Immigrants Rising has made this list of online contracting and freelance opportunities in high demand during Covid-19.
+ Immigration
Immigrants Rising has compiled a list of college scholarships available to all, regardless of immigration status - check it out here.
Legal Services for Children offers free support and representation to youth under 21. Call their phone line (415) 863-3762 (available in Spanish and English) to learn what options are available for you.

- The City College of San Francisco offers free ESL classes for adults; call one of their sites, listed here, for more information.
- Every Tuesday at 11:30 am, the Family Connections Center hosts a Zoom call for Latino families to meet up and talk about parenting, child development, and more. It is open to all Latino parents; find out how to join.
