Launching A Remote Summer MoDEL

In the face of the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis, Horizons at SFFS made the decision to switch our Summer 2020 programming to an entirely remote format. Our first ever Horizons at Home program served 117 K-6 students, providing them with project-based academic and enrichment content and a strong  sense of community and support.

Horizons at Home included:

  • Weekly community Zooms for each class where students and teachers could connect

  • Access to online learning platforms such as RazKids and Epic for bilingual literacy and DreamBox for math

  • Distribution of physical learning materials, such as STEM kits and paper workbooks, on three in-person Pickup Days

  • Reading Groups for individualized literacy support and instruction

  • Volunteer-made videos for artistic and physical enrichment activities

  • Community spaces such as movie nights, virtual lunches, and Boys and Girls clubs

  • Support to families in the form of weekly check-in calls, biweekly town hall-style “cafecitos,” and grocery stipends

We created a sustainable, replicable model for online summer learning which we will continue to develop and expand on for as long as necessary; at the present, we do not know what Summer 2021 will look like, but we are prepared for both online and in-person programming (or a hybrid model.)

To find out more about our Horizons at Home learning model, read through our Summer 2020 Impact Report or check out some highlights below!
