Horizons at HOME
Launching A Remote Summer MoDEL
In the face of the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis, Horizons at SFFS made the decision to switch our Summer 2020 programming to an entirely remote format. Our first ever Horizons at Home program served 117 K-6 students, providing them with project-based academic and enrichment content and a strong sense of community and support.
Horizons at Home included:
Weekly community Zooms for each class where students and teachers could connect
Access to online learning platforms such as RazKids and Epic for bilingual literacy and DreamBox for math
Distribution of physical learning materials, such as STEM kits and paper workbooks, on three in-person Pickup Days
Reading Groups for individualized literacy support and instruction
Volunteer-made videos for artistic and physical enrichment activities
Community spaces such as movie nights, virtual lunches, and Boys and Girls clubs
Support to families in the form of weekly check-in calls, biweekly town hall-style “cafecitos,” and grocery stipends
We created a sustainable, replicable model for online summer learning which we will continue to develop and expand on for as long as necessary; at the present, we do not know what Summer 2021 will look like, but we are prepared for both online and in-person programming (or a hybrid model.)
